Eventually I switched to linux and started delving into linux channels. The most important thing I learned from a linux channel is that if someone doesn’t know what they are talking about, they’ll act like they do anyhow, and when asked for information they’ll tell you to go find it. It seems to serve some people well.

I can relate to this message. IRC is like an old school IM world and it is very gripping. That being said my IRC client is as much on as my computer itself and I automatically connect to several channels (all of them are technology related). But to be fair I barely interact in any. Channels I use are usually really quiet and do not interfere much with the rest of my life.
I have also left every channels were regulars were bashing newbies because I hate that behavior. A few years back this was the case on the #python channel. I haven't connected to it for a few years now so they may have changed that but back then it was really sad. If I hadn't loved the language itself so much I would have dumped it just for that very reason.
That's also why on the #cherrypy channel we have fought for keeping it as cool as possible. People who make the effort to come to the channel should not be put off by some jerks. Mind you some new comers should also learn the netiquette.
Overall IRC is as addicting as anything else when done in excess. IRC is not bad in itself it is what you do with it that's bad.
