Mashup fans: You don’t need to know how to write a line of code if you want to create your own, customized mashup. You can use the beta of Microsoft’s new Popfly site, to build them by simply dragging building blocks onto a page and connecting them.

Within minutes of logging in, I had built several mashups. For example, one grabbed pictures from Yahoo and displayed them in a rotating cube.

The site has several dozen pre-built building blocks, with more to come. And while the site makes it easy for anyone to build mashups, it’s also a serious developer tool as well, because you can change the code yourself, create your own building blocks, and so on.

The site is far from perfect. It crashes on me regularly when it doesn’t like a particular mashup, for example. And the Microsoft Virtual Earth building block was particularly finicky.

Still, this site is worth checking out, especially because it lets anyone become a creator of Web content and mashups, not just a consumer.
