It might seem a bit on the esoteric side, but go take a look at the graphical representation of sound it produces. The Windows version has been out for a while now. The Mac OS X version (Tiger only) is labeled as experimental.
First of all you should talk about "free software" and not "open source software" because that is the real name.
I would not list freeware proprietary software together with open source software because they're different.
Please make some distinction! This will help many user understand the free digital world:
