The latest beta of Vista includes gadgets, and while there’s not much there yet, it’s a look into the future of Windows. Here’s a screenshot of the gadgets on my PC:

The top gadget is a kind of launch pad where you can launch programs with one click. Interesting, but not overly useful. The one beneath it is the good one — it’s a live feed of your RSS subscriptions. The others are pretty obvious — the Recycle Bin and a clock.
At this point, there’s not much to choose from, and you can’t customize the gadgets much. I’m hoping the next revision will do more with them.

Wow, they look exactly like OS X widgets. No wonder Vista has been delayed for so long. :)
Wow! It's like 1991 all over again!
I had that kind of stuff on the desktop of an ancient SunOS Thin Client back in 1995. The UNIX window managers have had this kind of 'cool new stuff' for a couple of decades. Heck the launcher brings back memories of windows 3, but with more colours.
Pretty much looks like the Yahoo Widgets taht are already available on any platform ...
Can you please tell me where to find that "launch pad" gadget? If possible, email me at peterjp80@gmail.com. Thank you.
Hmmm....the earliest that anyone can come up with for an example was 95? Gee, I remember the AMIGA could do this on a mere A500 back in 84....I had a temperature monitor that displayed inside and outside temps, the monitor connected to the SCSI port and super easy to put together. That kind of thing has been around since the GUI was thought up.
Ok, so it's not like they made up the concept of the UI. Hell, I like RocketDock a lot better than the widgets, and I like Google Desktop better than their version of it, but that's probably just me being used to it.
I like Vista so far, except for the control it tried to take away from me and the lack of drivers. Other than that, it's a solid enough operating system, as long as your hardware isn't embedded in a non-Vista manufactured laptop.

I think they are really cool, I have been trying to bring mine back after closing them. I can't find them anywhere. I may have stopped that service when I went to msconfig and stopped some I thought were not need programs starting up. I guess I was wrong because I can't find my gadgets anymore.
