660MBs worth of source code snippets of Windows2000 and NT4 have been leaked onto the net.
I fail to see how this could be a good thing.
Wait so what's the difference - Linux / Apache / Unix source code is widly available and downloadable. Why is Windows source code being leaked the end of the world?
Is it just because Windows is so prone to hacking / viruses? If so, I fail to see why this is a big deal, given the severity of pre-leak viruses and hack attacks...
When you download Apache or Unix/Linux source code you get the complete code, can find and fix bugs, generate executables for testing, and submit patches to the maintainers. If you had evil intent you might find a bug but there's a good chance someone else will find the same bug and fix it before you can come up with an exploit.
The Windows source code, on the other hand, was not intended to be available to the public and will almost certainly circulate farther and wider among the cracker community than any other. White hats won't be able to tell Microsoft about bugs they find (let alone submit patches) without admitting to illegal posession of the code. Publishing the findings through any public channel will probably give the black hats a huge time advantage. Even if Microsoft was to offer amnesty and accept bug reports/patches with open arms, there is less incentive for programmers to spend personal time on the project since they would be toiling in anonymity. At least when you submit a patch to an open source project you stand a chance of seeing your name in the Changelog....
