I've been a satisfied YDL customer fro awhile now and I really like the fact that it is a small distro that still feels like a community. Lead developers still ocasionally answer questions on the newbie's list.

I think the technical differences between the different distros are less important than the community aspects and the Yellow Dog folks seem like pretty good people.

And yes, mounting HFS+ partitions works like a charm.

Running Linux on a $2000-$3000 Apple PowerBook is nut.. Buy a much cheaper eMachines Notebook and give THAT one the lobotamy..

I am sure you will respond with "but Linux does ... and Mac OS X doesn't..". I hope it's just something you feel a need to do infrequently..

James Gosling once said that Mac OS X is like Linux, but with taste and an editor (i.e. a person to referee what goes on the desktop).

OK. I guess it is only an iBook (g4 I hope..). Knock yourself out.

So what are the advantages of HFS+ (Panther) over HFS (Jaguar I presume ran HFS?)?

How is YDL in regards to support for Mac hardware? I used to run Linux on my old Wintel box and found myself spending an entire weekend trying to get all my hardware to work..

Spoken like somebody who's never tried Linux. If you had tried it you would know that KMail is better than Mail.app, Konqueror is better than Safari, Konsole is better than Console.app. Essentially, if you care about power and functionality, and don't mind a few rough edges every now and then, then KDE beats OS X hands down.

By the way, I'm typing this from Safari, so don't think I haven't tried both systems. I'll be installing Linux on this puppy as soon as I can find a firewire drive that Panther won't maul so I can back up my OS X partition. (OS X "just works"! Yeah right!)

I have used Linux of and on since 1996 on a 386DX 20Mhz with 8MB RAM (yes it was a server with that kind of power). Ran great.

Anyway.. Linux is great. I stand by the statement. Buying premium Apple hardware to run Linux on is just NUTS!
