SuSE has taken the governor off SuSE Linux. You can now download SuSE 9, in its entirety, from their FTP servers. They seem a bit jammed this morning, no doubt from disgruntled users of Redhat (non-enterprise edition), but the big news is that it is available at all.
SuSE, for the last few years at least, has only had an evaluation CD available for download. This always kept me from using SuSE. But, how the tide has turned this morning! Now they’re giving it away, and apparently they can’t do so fast enough.
This is super news for home Linux users. As soon as the FTP servers calm down a bit I plan on installing it on my home machines. Once on my linux desktop tower and once on the other half of my iBook partition for it comes in PPC flavor too!
I for one welcome out new Novell/SuSE overlords!

SUSE has always had the FTP download
Ever since they removed their ISOs, SUSE has provided the means to install their stuff for free, albeit, not in the fashion that most were accustomed to. The main benefit is avoiding the creation of a "sub" sale market, where people go to 3rd parties for cheap copies... this is one of the reasons why RH no longer will do a supported consumer dist.

By "3rd parties for cheap copies" do you mean a Mandrake or a cheapbytes.com? That could be construed as either or both.

Not the first time. Maybe they weren't promoting it as much or at least it wasn't getting the same amount of attention pre-Novell.

Here is a big reason why. GNOME. SuSE focuses on KDE and Red Hat/Fedora focuses on KDE. If anything the RH folks are going to either move to Fedora or another GNOME focused distro.

SuSE will probably refocus their focus on Ximian/GNOME in the future since Novell also has purchased Ximian.
