There are only three days left to have your vote in which of our twenty one open source picks are going to Comdex. Make sure and cast your vote by 10/31.

In case you missed it the first time O’Reilly & Comdex are running a contest in which you can vote for which of the project choices get one of six spots to showoff their open source projects in a special open source pavillion on the show floor in Vegas.

Show your love by voting for your favorites before time runs out.

The fine folks running Comdex, Vegas have asked us for some help putting together a booth showing off some of the best of what open source has to offer. Well, we’re gonna ask you for some help. See, we only have limited space and soooo many possibilities. We need you to vote on a final six.

Taking into account that this isn’t going to be an intimate gathering, but a melee among the throngs of what is Comdex, we’ve put together a list of twenty one projects that we thought would have a good ‘presence’ (think shiny objects and some loud noises), and would do us proud at the show.

We’re going to put the final vote in your hands. Please visit our voting page to vote for three projects you’d like to see representin’ at Comdex. Of twenty one choices unfortunately we only have space for six so choose wisely and send some of your favorite projects to Vegas, baby!

This is a big deal for these projects folks. Let’s make some noise for this one. Trackback this page and/or leave a comment with an URL to where you’re mentioning it.

Fine print: You can only vote once a day, but you can do so every day up to Oct 31 when the vote will conclude.

Don’t feel bad if your favorite project isn’t on the list… we didn’t exclude anyone on purpose. Vote for the one we did include.

“Jabber… said it has signed up more than 4 million licensed users, while its total user base has surpassed that of ICQ

…growth in commercial users, up 30 percent from the beginning of this year… ”

…expects XMPP to be ratified soon by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as an Internet standard for instant messaging.”

Jabber… is there anything it can’t do?

On the subject of recent reports of how dangerous a software monoculture can be: “As seductive as it is to root for David against Goliath, the fact is: Microsoft is not the only ‘monoculture’ in the digital world. Protocols and open APIs are an example of a necessary monoculture; it would be difficult to describe the web, for example, without HTTP as a common interface. Or DNS. And so on. Linux is increasingly a monoculture. Linux is seen as ‘the Microsoft alternative’, and as such, is almost by definition a monoculture. Apache, like Linux, is one of the core applications constituting the web’s backbone. Should we kick Linux and Apache out or reduce their exposure in favor of IBM AIX, say, and Lotus Domino, just because these are not Microsoft and not Linux? We don’t think so.”

Does this add up to you?
