Sales Director, Conferences
The Sales Director is responsible for strategic direction of existing and
new sales programs across all O'Reilly conferences. This seasoned
professional will lead a team of sales people to significantly grow the
O'Reilly Conferences sponsorship business. Traditional and unconventional
sales tools and techniques will be necessary to drive sales into emerging
technology markets. Travel to all assigned conferences is a necessary
component of this position. The position is located at our Sebastopol, CA
headquarters office and reports to the VP, Conferences.

Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategic direction of new sales programs across
all conferences, including assessment of new business opportunities that
will maximize revenues
- Act as strategic lead and role model in ongoing interaction with top
clients using a variety of social networking and marketing tools
- Manage and motivate the conferences sales team to achieve and/or
exceed the revenue goals for conference sponsorship
- Develop annual sales strategy and related budgets, schedules, and
policies in support of O'Reilly conferences objectives
- Drive and execute outreach with key influencers and groups to gain
their involvement in events
- Attend trade shows and conferences; effectively represent the company
and our products and services
- Identify target markets and develop custom proposals
- Track client and prospect contacts through sales contact management
software (salesforce.com)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Expert knowledge of best practices for effective outreach, client
communications, and deal closure
- Knowledge of high-tech market trends and issues, particularly as
they relate to programming languages, operating systems, and internet
software
- Knowledge of O'Reilly conferences, products, and services
- Excellent proposal writing and presentation skills
- Advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email
applications, Internet searches
- Demonstrated ability to lead a sales team and train as needed
- Demonstrated ability to create an annual budget; maintain monthly
reconciliations
- Ability to juggle conflicting priorities; maintain flexibility to
allow for last minute changes
Minimum Requirements
- Four-year college degree in Business, Marketing, or Management, or
related area of study, or a combination of relevant education and
experience
- 5+ years experience in senior level technology sales role
- 3+ years experience in events, conferences and/or tradeshows
- Expert sales and sales management experience with deep knowledge
of contacts in the technology space
- A track record of delivering on business goals in an unpredictable
climate
- Experience with sales forecasting tools such as salesforce.com
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work long event days and stand/walk through large
convention centers
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds a distance of 20 yards
- Ability to sit as a desk and work on a computer, for up to 3
hours at a time
- Ability to talk on the telephone frequently throughout the day
- Ability to speak, read, and write in English
- Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time, including weekends
and holidays

approval
