Marketing Director, Conferences
The Marketing Director is directly responsible for strategic direction of
the O'Reilly conference marketing programs. The Marketing Director will
spearhead marketing initiatives that are consistent with the overall
conference strategy and goals, and manage ongoing results assessment and
follow-up. A strong communicator with excellent presentation and proven
writing skills, the Marketing Director is responsible for driving outreach
to key new technical markets and will act as marketing lead in ongoing
interaction with technical communities, using a variety of social
networking and marketing tools. The Marketing Director is proactive with
an entrepreneurial spirit, yet able to work as part of a close knit team
and will have responsibility for managing the Conference Marketing staff.
Travel to all assigned conferences is a necessary component of this
position. This position is located at our Sebastopol, CA headquarters
office and reports to the VP, Conferences.

Responsibilities
- Analyze and track results of marketing efforts to achieve and/or
exceed the revenue goals for each individual conference
- Strategize with program chairs/committee members, Sales, Book
Publishing, Marketing, Design, and Safari Books Online as appropriate on
integrated marketing ideas and tasks
- Identify opportunities, allocate resources, develop marketing messages
and execute marketing programs that deliver results
- Drive and execute outreach with key influencers and groups to gain
their involvement in events, both for pre-event promotion and onsite
involvement and activities
- Act as marketing leader in ongoing interaction with key technical
communities using a variety of social networking and marketing tools
- Work with and manage marketing personnel in the promotion of products
and services
- Manage and motivate conference marketing personnel to develop a strong
and effective team
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Expert knowledge of marketing best practices for effective
outreach, including current social networking tools
- Strong, working knowledge of technical audiences
- Knowledge of O'Reilly conferences, products, and services
- Knowledge of trends and issues in technology industries,
particularly as they relate to programming languages, operating systems,
Internet software, and social media
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage
multiple priorities and projects under extreme time constraints
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills; strong command
of grammar, spelling, and style
- Advanced skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and email
applications
- Proven ability to pursue opportunities and audiences in new event
space
- Ability to learn new tools and programs, such as SiteCatalyst,
iPost, ExpectNation, GoogleDocs
- Ability to maintain creativity, flexibility, and motivation in a
team environment
Minimum Requirements
- Four-year college degree in Business, Marketing, or Management, or
related area of study, or a combination of relevant education and
experience
- 5+ years experience in senior level marketing role
- 3+ years experience in events, conferences, and/or tradeshows
Physical Requirements (with or without accommodation):
- Ability to work long event days and stand/walk through large
convention centers
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds a distance of 20 yards
- Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer, for up to 3
hours at a time
- Ability to talk on the telephone frequently throughout the day
- Ability to speak, read, and write in English
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time including weekends and holidays, domestically and internationally
