Community Manager, User Group Program

The Community Manager strengthens the O'Reilly brand by growing the user group (UG) program through community outreach and personal relationships. UG leaders and similar organizations are important influencers in the tech industry and gather together in person and online to share their knowledge and network on a constant basis. This position reports to the Community Manager, located at our corporate headquarters offices in Sebastopol, CA. This position may be eligible for a remote office location or part-time telecommuting.


Responsibilities

  • Building and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with UG leaders and other influential community leaders, authors, O'Reilly editors, FOOS (Friends of O'Reilly), and reviewers
  • Building an awareness of O'Reilly through personal connections measured favorably on other blogs, forums, and social media sites
  • Delivering our products, services, and initiatives that are useful to the community at large and growing the number of customers and members engaged with O'Reilly
  • Working closely with the UG program manager, PR, Marketing, and Online teams to broaden O'Reilly's reach into the technology community
  • Listening to the community needs and desires and gathering feedback through reviews and conversations
  • Creating newsletter and email content
  • Researching and contacting UG leaders in non-marketing communications
  • Arranging author appearances at community and UG events
  • Providing review/promotional copies of books, ebooks, videos, and other services
  • Maintaining and updating UG database contacts
  • Maintain online UG web content
  • Participating on appropriate blogs, forums, and social media sites

Minimum Requirements

  • 4-year college degree in English, journalism, communications, or related area of study, or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • 3+ years experience in technical community outreach
  • 3+ years experience in community events, conferences, and tradeshows
  • "Big picture" knowledge of the technology communities and the technologies they represent
  • Extensive knowledge of social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube, Google Wave and others yet to be created
  • Working knowledge of existing and emerging digital technologies
  • Ability to work with diverse populations all over the world and connect with them via phone, email, in-person, and online
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in blogging, HTML, and content management systems
  • Intermediate skills in database management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent reasoning and problem solving skills
  • Strong organizational and relationship building skills
