Initially released seven years ago, Windows PowerShell is a supercharged command-line utility designed to provide greater control and flexibility to IT administrators and developers. According to Microsoft, "using a new admin-focused scripting language, more than 130 standard command line tools, and consistent syntax and utilities, Windows PowerShell allows IT professionals to more easily control system administration and accelerate automation."
Even though the Windows PowerShell Cookbook isn't a tutorial per se, the format in which information is conveyed and described seems to be more effective in helping new and experienced PowerShell users alike experiment with scripts and topics relevant to their needs. Holmes explains this as "helping you learn PowerShell through task-based solutions to your most pressing problems. Read a recipe, read a chapter, or read the entire bookâ€â€regardless, you’re bound to learn something."
This task-based solution approach is an excellent way to display real-world examples of implementations and explain certain areas with logical and understandable scenarios. Full Review >

The first thing to note about the Python Pocket Reference is that if I was completely new to the Python programming language and wanted to pick up a handy 'reference guide' to getting started with essential concepts, this would not be an ideal book for my needs whatsoever. Apart from the single-page introduction, the book provides no logical flow that would allow someone new to Python to jump right in and start experimenting with basic functions and progress to advanced skills by the end of the book. There is other books that suit beginner Python programmers and I would suggest that a more detailed read in a tutorial format would suffice.
However, if you're an experienced Python programmer with existing awareness and knowledge of the topics covered (statements, syntax, types etcetera) then Lutz's reference is an excellent book to keep handy whenever you're working with Python. As this is not a tutorial or guide book, expect no images or graphics to break up large paragraphs of text, but instead well-presented tables containing essential expressions linked to the current chapter and bullet-pointed lists with colour-coding and a distinctive pre-formatted typeface for code. Kissell succinctly opens Take Control of iCloud with an overview-style introduction and a 'Quick Steps' guide, helpful for those with little or basic understanding of iCloud. From the second you pass the introductory chapters you are greeted by a well-designed layout with presentational emphasis on certain points and a well-structured flow of information. This complements the way in which chapters are written and allows Kissell to explore specific concepts in more detail while retaining the general theme of a chapter. Full Review >

O’Reilly books in the Missing Manual series carry the slogan “[the] book that should have been in the box,†a statement which certainly in this case, at least, I agree with entirely, as Pogue's delivery and clarity presented in OS X Mountain Lion: The Missing Manual, in my opinion, serves as an excellent choice for a default guide to the new version of OS X, whether you've had a Mac for years or you're just getting started.
