LED Lighting: A Primer to Lighting the Future by Sal Cangeloso is a very good primer to the world of LED lighting. It begins with a chapter on key feature of LED lights in an attempt to win you over. The book is structured very well but has too few illustrations for my taste. The information it carries is very thorough but may turn off non techies. Although I am an electronics engineer and am very interested in green technologies, I felt that the primer was not very successful in keeping me interested. Perhaps this is what primers are for and my expectations were misplaced. Recommended for those seeking a thorough but short reference about LED lighting. Not recommended for non-techies. Being a wannabee chef, I found Cool Tools in the Kitchen by Kevin Kelly and Steven Leckart a fun and informative read. The book is like a catalog of kitchen gadgets. The only difference is that the book contains candid reviews on the tool and in now way sounded like sales pitches. Full Review >

Google Power Search

The Essential Guide to Finding Anything Online with Google

Google Power Search is a brief but direct book(let) on how to exploit Google's various search engine features. Althoug the things discussed in the first two chapters may be readily available in various blogs and forums, the contents of the rest of the book are very valuable. Some advanced and not-so-well-known features are also introduced. I am glad to have found the book as the section on common operators help me immediately in avoiding frustration in looking for what I really want. Finding what I need on the first page of results rather than on the third page is really great. Highly recommended for those who do a lot of searching on the internet, especially those who want to find them quickly. The Manga Guide to Relativity

The Manga Guide to Relativity

Many years ago, when I was in Japan for business trips, I would often find myself hanging out in bookshops and browsing technical books. Not that I can read entire Japanese books, but I find them very informative with all the illustrations. Looking at illustrations alone and understanding the descriptions are sometimes enough for me. When I found The Manga Guide to Relativity, my first reaction was that of skepticism. There is no way they can teach relativity thru Manga. Being a fan of Japanese animation, I gave it a try, just for entertainment value. I was delightfully surprised that the topic of relativity was seamlessly integrated to a humorous story: Japanese humor + Japanese comic + science = a fun and informative read. Full Review >

The book presents the idea of approaching the brainstorming activity using games through collaborative play. I enjoyed going over the book and found the games very useful, some of them entertaining as well. Approaching brainstorming in the form of a game is a new concept for me and it took quite a while to become open to the games presented. One of the things that is very helpful is the good number of illustrations in the book the really helps the 'serious' brainstormer like me to appreciate the concepts being presented. The games are presented in a manner that is straightforward and with just enough information similar to what you would expect in playing board games. One thing that stands out for me is the whole chapter devoted to the skills required in order to increase success in doing gamestorms. I am looking forward to using the methods in my next brainstorming activity. Recommended for those involved in generating ideas for almost anything like problems Full Review >
