Biography

J Steven Perry is a software developer, architect, and general Java nut who has been developing software professionally since 1991. His professional interests range from the inner workings of the JVM to UML modeling, and everything in between. Steve writes everything from technical documentation to Java code, and while his writing has been accused of being “folksy” (though he prefers to refer to it as “conversational”) he loves to write and has a passion for teaching and mentoring. Steve is the author of Java Management Extensions (O'Reilly, 2002), coauthor of Java Enterprise Best Practices (O'Reilly 2002), and several magazine articles related to software development topics. When not writing software or writing about how to write software Steve enjoys spending time with his children, riding his bicycle, and building electronics projects. Unless an episode of Lost is waiting to be watched on his DVR.

Wow, Bing search results look just like Google search results

July 04 2009

I can’t say I’m surprised. Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing, which is trying to compete with Google search, has results which look remarkably like google search results. Does Bing use google search under the hood? It sure looks like it. While Microsoft continues to try dominating, Google succeeds at innovating. I hope… read more

Bring Price in Line with Quality?

July 01 2009

I’m no fan of offshore outsourcing, but it has nothing to do with “our jobs” or anything else political. I believe in global markets, and the price of labor is what someone is willing to pay. When I saw this article, I got to thinking about my experience with offshore… read more

Two billion aluminum atoms can’t be wrong

June 30 2009

The idea of quantum computing is fascinating to me. I don’t fully understand how it works, but the idea that computer innards continue to become vanishingly small is just, well, neat. I ran across this article on quantum computing. Using two billion aluminum atoms to create an “artificial atom”, scientists… read more

Cisco Advocates Telecommuting. Really?

June 29 2009

And Microsoft advocates OEM relationships. Really? And IBM likes the color blue. Okay, I can sometimes (like now) be sarcastic, but this one tickled me. I saw this article in Information Week online. It’s obvious that telecommuting – of which I’m a HUGE advocate, along with the paperless office and line… read more

The King is Dead.

June 28 2009

I didn’t drive my chevy to the levy. I didn’t hang out with people drinking whiskey and rye. But it was a sad, sad day. See, I’m old. Well, not old exactly. But, old enough to remember when Michael Jackson was cool. Really cool. We called him the King of… read more

Shocking!

June 25 2009

There is just something about an electric car that intrigues me. Probably my inner electronics geek coming out. But in any event, Tesla Motors has been given a huge grant to speed up production of their electric cars. Here’s a link to the InformationWeek article. At some point, our dependence on… read more

Log4j Really is Cool

June 25 2009

My latest writing project is about log4j. I continue to be impressed with log4j the more I use it. It has a very elegant architecture. I’ve thought of doing “Stupid Log4j Tricks” like writing a message-based Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) using log4j as the backbone, along with custom Levels, security,… read more

Google Web Toolkit

June 23 2009

I’ve been looking at Google Web Toolkit (GWT) and am excited. I know there are a zillion UI frameworks for Java out there, but GWT is different. And by different I mean backed by Google. In fact, at Google IO, Google announced Wave, and in doing so said (several times,… read more

It’s Okay to Make a Mistake

April 02 2009

I know someone – maybe it’s me – who doesn’t know how to have a relationship. This person thinks it’s okay to expect the other party to initiate all the interaction, all the contact, take all the risks, and yet still consider that being in a relationship. That’s, well, lame.… read more

Absent

March 27 2009

My soul sighs its icy breath. Something is misplaced. Missing. Then… She breathes me in. I breathe her out. In her eyes, countless yesterdays vanish. Like Spring’s first warm breeze she laughs, And encircles me for a moment; My soul’s chill thaws, Bathed in hope’s Sun, then… Gone again. A beautiful dream. Gone again. read more
