Biography

I am what you might call an "advanced amateur", a "Semi-Pro" or a "Part-Time Pro". I do not rely on photography as my primary source of income, which allows me to have fun with my photography but occasionally make sales to help pay the bills. I shoot with a pair of Canon EOS digital SLR bodies and a variety of Canon "L" glass. You can see my work at www.allenrockwellphoto.com

Give Yourself A Photo Assignment

March 05 2007

I find it very helpful to give yourself a photo assignment from time to time. Photo assignments can help you expand your skills and force you to step out of your comfort zone and work on your craft a bit. Last night I gave myself the assignment to grab my camera,… read more

Lines On Images After Export To JPG

February 25 2007

It was reported some time ago that many Aperture users were seeing strange lines on their images after exporting to JPG. While it seemed that this problem was solved in v1.5.1 it seems that some people (including myself) are still having the problem from time to time. The fix seems to… read more

Something new for Canon shooters

I’ve been shooting with the Canon EOS 20D and 30D for quite a while now and I do a lot of sports shooting. While I think these camera bodies are great performers for the money I do have a few features on my wish list… especially for sports shooting. I’ve… read more

Another Use For Auto-Stack

February 18 2007

I recently discovered another great use for the Auto-Stack feature in Aperture. I was shooting a large regional swim meet and wanted to make sure I didn’t miss any critical shots, but I could not get a second a shooter go with me to the event. So I rigged up my… read more

Is it the camera or the photographer .. or both?

February 10 2007

“It’s the photographer that takes the picture, not the camera” This is a very popular saying, and a lot of people agree with it ….. but I’m going to play devil’s advocate and take the opposite opinion tonight. Some people take the saying one step further and say that you can… read more

There are several cases where you might want to batch change the metadata of many images… read more

Do The Time Warp

Here is a cool little tip if you have taken a bunch of photos in a time zone other than your camera’s “home” time zone. Select all the images that are showing up with the wrong time data in the EXIF “Image Date” field then select the “Metadata” menu and… read more

Create a Web Gallery in Aperture

January 20 2007

This week I’m going to show you how you can create an online image gallery in only a few minutes. Aperture makes this so easy that you can probably create a gallery in less time than it takes to upload it to your server. Last week while on my way to… read more

On The Road Workflow

January 13 2007

One of the things I like to do on this blog is to discuss features in Aperture that I’ve recently discovered or perhaps just started using. And with the hundreds or thousands of features in this program it looks like I’ll have plenty to write about for a long time. Normally… read more

The Light Table Feature

December 29 2006

Today I'm going to write about a feature of Aperture that you've probably heard of but maybe never tried. We all establish our own personal workflow style pretty early on when using new software, and I'm no different. I've been... read more

HDR Postprocessing

December 22 2006

Today I’m going to stray away from Aperture a bit and discuss a post processing technique that, while it can involve Aperture for part of the processing, it uses other software for the majority of the post processing. The process/technique is known as High Dynamic Range processing or simply HDR.… read more

I feel the need ... The need for speed

December 15 2006

Some of the younger readers might not recognize the title of this post as a line from the 1980’s movie Top Gun, and others of us barely remember it because it was so long ago :) But this post is about speed. If you are like most photographers you are… read more

They fixed the watermark!

December 11 2006

There was one “feature” in version 1.5.1 that really annoyed me. It was in the export module, it you specified a watermark file Aperture would apply the watermark before it resized the image. So if you were carefull to create a watermark exactly the size you wanted it, it would… read more
