Use Bluetooth for SMS

Apple seems to be popularizing Bluetooth much in the same manner as it did for USB, 802.11b, and FireWire technologies.
Although Apple has done a good job supporting Bluetooth technology, not much has been done to educate users about what it can do. Recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the little nifty Address Book (in Mac OS X) has built-in Bluetooth functionality that allows you to send and receive SMS (Short Message Service) messages through your Bluetooth-enabled phone, all via your computer!
If you've ever hammered out an SMS note using the buttons on your tiny cell phone, then you know it would be much easier to use your full-sized computer keyboard instead. In this article, I will show you how to use Mac OS X to easily send SMS messages.
You will need a Bluetooth adapter (such as the D-Link USB Bluetooth Adapter) for your Mac, and a Bluetooth-enabled phone (such as the Ericsson T68i).
Pairing Up Your Phone with Address Book
With your Address Book powered up, the first thing to do is to pair it up with your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. To do so, you need to turn on the Bluetooth radio on your phone, and then click on the Bluetooth icon on the Address Book:

If the pairing is successful, you should see the icon in blue, (else it will appear grayed-out).
Sending SMS Messages
With the pairing done, you are now ready to send a SMS! To send someone in Address Book a SMS message, select the name and click on the phone number of the user. Three options will be displayed:

You can display the number in huge fonts, send the person a SMS message, or make a call to the person. If you select SMS Message, you can key in the message (maximum of 160 characters) and simply click Send. Tired fingers are now a thing of the past!

Receiving SMS messages
Besides sending SMS messages, your Address Book will also inform you of incoming SMS messages:

When an incoming message is received, Address Book will prompt a window displaying the message. You can save the message to the Address Book (more on this later) or reply to the message. Address Book will automatically match the number of the caller (supplied by your mobile phone, which requires Caller ID service) with its name list, and display the person's name.
To reply to the message, simply click on the Reply button. You can now reply to a SMS message directly on the Mac.

Handling Incoming Calls
When your phone rings, Address Book will notify you and provide three options--reply to the caller via SMS, activate Voice Mail on the mobile phone (the phone will then stop ringing), or simply answer the call.

If you clicked SMS Reply, you can then send a SMS message to the caller, perhaps to inform him that you will call him later.

Saving Incoming Messages
When you receive an incoming message, you can save it to your Address Book for archiving. Clicking on the Save to Note button in the Incoming SMS Message window will append the message to the contact information:

Final Thoughts
Apple has done it again. I am slowly but surely integrating my Mac into my digital lifestyle. With my Bluetooth-enabled phone and Mac, sending SMS messages will never be the same again. And to the critics of Bluetooth, Apple has provided yet another reason to show that Bluetooth is alive and kicking!

All of you people who are doing a senior level project might want to try learning a thing or two about google's "I'm feeling lucky" button...

Things like this usually happen because someone googles an article, finds the first one and asks for code. So, the pagerank for that term plus "code" goes up. The more people that click, the higher it goes. Happens way too often.

Having trouble getting SMS and dialing to work properly via your Sony Ericsson? According to mobile.feisar.com, "Address Book has not been updated to support any new Sony Ericsson phones since...2003." However, that site has a great little app called "Address Book Enabler" available for ~3 USD (at the time of this posting) that fixes this issue. It's a quick and easy installation, and worked perfectly for my W580i.

Hi...Problem is not with Nokia, but with the whole SymbianOS..thing.
Thus any phone with Symbian will nnot allow you to recieve SMS via Addressbook. Is just the way Symbian handles incoming....address box does not recognise it...maybe have to wait till Tiger!

SMS seems to work great with my bluetooth enabled t68i/Powerbook G4 AddressBook. However, if I get an SMS from someone (like, say, tMobile) that isn't in my phone book, it pops up as if it's from someone random in my phone book (like, say, my mom). Anyone else had this issue or know how to fix it?

Be aware that Nokia's implementation of Bluetooth is what you might call 'non-standard'. A lot of 3rd party bluetooth kit - USB adapters, heatsets etc simply don't work with them. This is Nokia's fault, not anyone elses. They also don't support (as far as I'm aware) the SyncXML (or it could be SyncML) standard for passing address data, so that's a showstopper too. I wouldn't really expect a nokia phone to do any of this stuff correctly. Complain to Nokia about it. -

The newer phones do support syncML such as the 7650, 3650. Even the 7250 does but of course nokia had to stuff up a perfect phone by leaving out bluetooth! So I'm stuck with getting the chunky 3650. :(

Yes ! You can send SMS directly from Outlook. but you need a little plugin, and your provider must support it. So you don't need Bluetooth or mac to do it.

The only option you have for windows is the software that comes with your particular phone. Apple's address book is not available for PC. And Microsoft are too slow at writing stuff as cool as this!

jaguar 10.2.5 didn't fix the p800 problem. it does work with bluetooth now, but only for sending files and internet connection sharing, what about SMSing? syncronization?? hope they fix it soon....

I thought I had it all figured when it comes to know what's under the bonnet in 10.2; ...But yet there is another suprize. Pairing the T68i with the mac is required for any communication between the phone and the pc, but this is one of these unadvertised understated mac secrets. 10 out of 10 for this one to the developers at mac.

The phone is seen, paired, and AddressBook tries but there isn't a moan from the phone. I contacted the 3 intended receipients and they confirmed failure. -

I am using T39m, all features (sms, make & receive call, sync adressbook) work.
Maybe you need to upgrade your firmware, earlier versions have been known to misbehave.

I am using OS X 10.2 and my Nokia 6310, and the AddressBook sms feature works just enough to water my mouth, but is not reliable enough to really use it :-( About 9 out of 10 sms go through, one is lost. Same with incoming sms, about half of them get displayed on the powerbook screen, the rest remains in the cell phone. I can't really tell under which circumstances it works, or not, it's simply not reproducable...
If you can't see your bluetooth enabled cell phone from AddressBook, there is a whole System Preferences Panel to fiddle with... I needed to set the Nokia to visible and enter a password to get the two paired.

Apple advertised and mentiond Ericsson. That's no surprise, at least in the U.S., because the model mentioned works. I have one.
My daughter has a different model Nokia than one elsewhere listed. It doesn't work at all.
A friend has another model Nokia that worked as easily as my Ericsson.
OSX works with more printers than it did 03/01. Maybe more phones soon? Depends on demnd and their priorities.
Ain't bleeding edge always grand when you get lucky and it works?

Make sure the USB Bluetooth adapter shows up in System Prefs and turn it on....
I'm SMSing right now....you have to pair the phone first using iSync or Address Book.

Just re-analysing all this for the upteenth time...I notice that in the Bluetooth setup assistant feature the "Use Address Book" and iSync radio options are also "greyed out".

I'd be using a G4 PowerBook, OSX 10.3.3, a Motorola V525 - have managed to pair the two and transfer files, but same "greyed out" SMS drop down even when I went through the pairing process again.
Odd. Is the firmware on the phone outdated?

Surprise, surprise. I just bought my t68i and am starting to discover useful Bluetooth tricks it can do. This SMS article worked very well. Surprisingly, you don't have to make your phone discoverable for it to work.

I could tell you 40 different reasons as to why I swtich to Mac with OS X, this is one of them. I wanted the t68i even before I got the Mac. After I got the Mac, I REALLY wanted the t68i.
Note that leaving your phone in bluetooth mode does run the battery down faster. Oh, and how about the find a friend function on ATT's network, sweet huh?

Well, i am lucky and i even had a T68i before Apple used it in it's demos all over. You'd think that is THE phone for the mac.
However, i had no luck sending SMS via Bluetoth here with my German GSM provider. Clicking on SEND SMS doesn't even seem to trigger any communication with the Phone. I'm puzled. -

I just found out, that sending SMS DOES work just fine with my T68i - i only thought it didn't.
Another Example of BAD Interface Design from some of the Apple OSX Engineers. if you send an SMS from AddressBook, there is absolutely ZERO feedback from the App to tell the user if sending was sucessfull or not. This is bad since it seems SMS sent vie Bluetooth/AddressBook aren't stored in your Phone's "Sent SMS" Box, so there is NO WAY to tell if a message had successfully been sent. Another Problem is, that sending via Bluetooth doesn't HONOR my phones "Return Receipt" Settings. Here in Germany, we can configure our Phones to request a "Return Receipt" for any sent SMS, so we definitively know if an SMS was received. A handy setting, just not used from within AddressBook...

On the Return Receipt point, you have to get your head around the concept that it is the Mac sending the SMS, not the phone. So you would have to set Return Receipt on the Mac. Same goes for stored sent messages. It is exactly the same as if you send from a Palm. You are not transferring an SMS to the phone and asking the phone to send it, but rather using the phone as a relay. I think you have to accept that it this is really early adopter stuff and some features aren't there yet. Try posting it as a suggestion on the Apple support newsgroups. And it wouldn't hurt to be polite... -

i am sorry if i sounded impolite. Didn't mean to sound so - might be because english is not my native language ;-) I'd be really interrested what specific word or sentence you found impolite?
I think you missed (or i didn't make it clear) the main Point of my POST which was the Lacking User-Feedback from the AddressBook app. No dialog displayed after sending an SMS nothing, nada. That's what i call bad interface design.
I am an Apple Seect Dev. member, so be asured that i'll pass them along my findings.
As for the rest, yes - that's more a feature request, for instance have Address-Book read the Return-receipt Settings of my Phone and use them...
For me, the metapher i think about when Sending SMS from Address Book is a "Remote control". Since i know, the mac doesn't have GSM built in, so it can't send SMS - it's only acting as a Front-End to the Phone, so my expectations are, that most of the Phones Preferences should apply. -

On the Orange Network here in the UK if you start the message with "RCT " (thats RCT followed by SPACE) you get a text message back thats basically gobblegook - but if you ignor the junk it shows the message has been delivered.
Not as elegenet as the "Message Delivered" prompt on my T68i and it's Recepit mode, but useful none the less.
I have just tried using this on Microsoft SMS Sender for Windows XP and it worked via that, where as the messages sent from it normally have no feedback on the handset. -

Your not the only one. The 3650 pretty much the brother phone of the 7650 doesn't notify me of incoming SMS's either. I can send an SMS using the address book and I am notified of incoming calls, however not incoming SMS's. Another thing that sucks is that when you send an SMS you don't get a confirmation that it was sent or anything. Nor does the phone display an outgoing SMS icon with delivery notification. What do you guys think? Is it a setting or perhaps just partically unsupported protocol.
