Bluetooth on Mac OS X
Pages: 1, 2
Upon discovering the T68i, I clicked the Pair button to perform the pairing of the my computer and the T68i. You would need to supply a Passkey on the computer as well as on the T68i. This passkey is necessary in order to establish a connection.

Once pairing is completed, you need to specify a serial port to use so that it can communicate between the two devices. To do so, click the Serial Ports tab and click New...:

Once the serial port is selected, I am now ready to "talk" to my T68i.
Using the Ericsson Client
There is a handy application on the Internet called the Ericsson Client (version 1.0.0) The Ericsson Client is an application for Mac OS X that allows you to transfer files to and from your Ericsson phone using a cable or a wireless Infrared or Bluetooth connection. Developed by Jonas Salling, Ericsson Client is a shareware and folks who find it useful and use it should preferably pay for it ($10).
Accordingly, Ericsson Client is capable of the following:
- Make use of the PIM capabilities in your phone by importing contacts and calendar items from your favorite calendar/address application.
- Make a backup of your phone's calendar or phone book.
- Transfer cool images (.gif) and ring tones (iMelody/eMelody) to the phone.
- Transfer themes (.thm) files to Ericsson T68i.
And so I went on to download and install the Ericsson Client. After installation, you need to select from the Preferences window the serial port to use; else it will not be able to find your phone.

If everything went well, you should see the following:

To test the capabilities of the Ericsson Client. I copied a few background images and a few themes (free.)

Copying the themes and images to the T68i is then a matter of dragging and dropping them onto the window:

Besides uploading images and themes, you can also perform a backup of your phone's calendar or phone book.
Files Transfers Between Macs and Devices
Another utility that came with the Technology Preview is Bluetooth File Exchange. This utility allows Macs and devices equipped with Bluetooth devices to perform file transfers. To transfer files between devices, simply drag the file(s) that you want to transfer and drop it onto the icon, and a dialog box will let you discover and choose other Bluetooth-enabled devices. You can use this utility to transfer files between Macs and PDAs such as Palm and Pocket PCs. For example, you can send a business card from a Palm handheld to a Mac.

Final Thoughts
So far I have only described one particular use of Bluetooth--connecting to my Ericsson T68i. However, there are many other Bluetooth uses: for example, you can connect to the Internet using the T68i as a GPRS modem. Another use would be to print wirelessly to a Bluetooth-enabled printer. Or a Bluetooth-equipped digital camera that sends images to the computer as soon as they are taken. The list goes on and on. While Bluetooth will not replace your AirPort (due to its lower throughput of 1Mbps versus AirPort's 11Mbps), be prepared to see more devices that are Bluetooth-enabled in the future! But for now, I am just glad my PC USB Bluetooth adapter works!

Anyone seen a PC-Card Bluetooth adapter that works with OS X?
I think I'd rather have an antenna sticking out the pc card slot of my TiBook, rather than leave the connector door wedged open by a USB Bluetooth dongle.

I have a no. of TDK blue products purchased in 2002 for a variety of windows projects. I just plugged the USB into my iMAC and hey presto it works. However, I seem to have a problem when the screen saver kicks in and I then wake -up my MAC! I t appears that I have to disconnect the USB adpater before I can do anything on the MAC! Any ideas? -

USB adapter- Belkin works
2002-08-22 14:23:36 magicspoon [View]
Hey there.
I have a powerbook Ti- and i have succesfully used the Belkin BT adapter without a hitch. The mac is discoverable and I have sent files over to a BT equipped iPaq. The Belkin is nice because its got a 100m range as opposed to the 10m on the d-Link.
However, I cannot send files to the Mac, nor can I control where the files get sent with the file exchange. When I try sending files to the mac I get a "device does not support this protocol" or some such error. I could be a total muppet, but has anyone else noticed there's virtually no documentation on BT networking?

Any scanners and printers supported

I am looking to buy a new scanner and printer to use primarily with my TiBook.
Are there any of the newer scanners and printers that work with Bluetooth on Mac OS X -- Both HP & Epson have models/interfaces that support win machines.
Thanks!

do you mean 3G service provider? Op hahha there are none! Hahahhahahha At least there are no true 3G networks in USA. there are companies working on it presently, but none offering specific 3G service yet. 3G is super sweet, able to have realtime video conferencing over a SonyEricsson Z1010, which has 2 cameras on it. Tight shizzzznit.

Apple Laptop Keyboards Unsuitable for Unix Users
2002-09-18 02:14:26 anonymous2 [View]
Apple laptops are effectively unusable for unix users.
I am a long-time Unix user. That means I need to have the Ctrl key to the left of the A key. This is a genuine need, not merely a want; it is based upon ergonomics. The Ctrl key is heavily used in unix, and it must be easily accessable. It cannot be off in the lower left corner of the keyboard where it is difficult to get at, and where it distorts the position of your left hand such that you can't easily type other keys while holding the Ctrl key down.
Apple desktop keyboards are now all USB. They are all OK. The CapsLock key can be re-mapped into a Ctrl key.
Unfortunately, even in this modern age, all Apple laptops have built-in ADB keyboards. The ADB keyboard is broken-by-design. It is, in general, not possible to remap the CapsLock key into a Ctrl key.
There are some exceptions, but they are horrible kludges. They are horrible kludges because the original design of the ADB keyboard was a horrible kludge. The correct solution would be for Apple to re-design their laptop motherboards to use built-in USB keyboards. This hasn't happened yet. If you run Linux, use Debian's solution. For Mac OS X users, uControl works. There are no solutions (that I know of) for either NetBSD or OpenBSD. Please note once again that the "solutions" above are in fact kludges, because of the original bad design of the ADB keyboard.
Apple is (currently) ignoring Unix users! This is not merely speculation on my part. In an on-going email exchange I am having with an Apple employee (whom I won't name) in their marketing department, the Apple marketing person directly stated to me that Apple was catering to their historic Mac customers, and is purposely ignoring the Unix market. He also claimed that Apple would soon start paying more attention to the Unix market. I won't hold my breath. Apple has been ignoring Unix users for more than 10 years. I expect that trend to continue. (Also note that my Apple contact indicated that Macs would never ship with a 3-button mouse, even though Apple intended to port almost all X-window software and deliver it either on a CD/DVD or installed directly on each Mac's hard drive. How Unix friendly is a 1-button mouse with X programs that often require 3 buttons?)
Apple has now lost two opportunities to sell me hardware. I really wanted an Apple laptop for their superior battery life, and for the PowerPC with Altivec CPU. (The Altivec is vastly superior to the x86 line for DSP.) Because I can't live with the broken-by-design built-in ADB keyboard in all Apple laptops, Sony and IBM sold me laptops instead. If Apple fixes this problem, they will sell me a PowerBook next year; if they don't, I'll still be running OpenBSD on x86 hardware, and wishing I could use a Mac.

Apple Laptop Keyboards Unsuitable for Unix Users
2003-08-12 12:44:11 anonymous2 [View]
Tell Apple your woes. What does this have to do with Bluetooth, anyway?
Apple ignoring Unix users? Must be why they based Mac OS X on *BSD userland, bundled Emacs with it, and supplied gobs of well-crafted docs on how to get your Unix apps running on Mac OS X.
I seem to recall some early doubt as to whether commercial releases of Mac OS X would even include a Unix shell. Come on, dude. I use Emacs every day with my "broken" keyboard and it doesn't kill me.

Screensavers/Animation

Hi!
Try to plug your bluetooth adaptor to the mac instead of the keyboard. The power available are different depending on where you plug-it. I had the same problem with many devices that didn't work when plugged to the keyboard but who did work if pluggen directly to the machine.
Cheers...

Bluetooth
2002-09-28 09:22:57 anonymous2 [View]
I purchased D-Link and downloaded Apple's Bluetooth Preview 2.1. Although the computer would recognize my printer, hooked up to an Anycom Bluetooth printer module, it would not allow me to pair with it. Looks like a glitch in the software (I am running OS X 1.15).
Apple support is useless for Bluetooth. Very frustrating!

Sigh, I guess we are all still ahead of the curve when it comes to bluetooth. I just bought one of these cool headsets hoping it would work with ViaVoice and the new iChatAV but bummer, it does not work at all.
I am so disappointed. The good news might be that this product might work with a future windows laptop out of the box as in the manual it says that this device can be used with any computer whos software is Bluetooth 1.1 compliant. It says in the manual that this device _CAN_ be used as a wireless headset.
Maybe Apple will write a driver.
If anyone find info on how to make this work with the mac and iChatAV, please shoot me an email at:

I have an early 17" PB G4 1mHz and am trying to set up a Jabra 250 headset to use with Skype. I have the newest upgrades (Bluetooth 1.5 and Firmware Updater 1.2) installed, but it still doesn't seem to work. When I use the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, it can find the phone, but when I press "Continue" I get the message, "Failed to set up the headset. Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware." Is it really a hardware question? Did Apple change the hardware at some point and, if so, is it possible to get an upgrade? I called Apple Support and they were less than helpful. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

not in system preferences -- MS bluetooth
2003-03-24 14:47:00 anonymous2 [View]
we got a MS Desktop kit to use for testing interference with 802.11b, and having done that I wanted to try it with my Mac. I pluged in the USB bluetooth AP, and couldn't tell it was there. no Bluetooth symbol in my System Preferences, etc. but when I moved it to my keyboard from my USB hub, I got the error message from the article, and was hopeful. I put it back in the hub and rebooted.
my Mac spent forever at the spinning circle on boot, but when it finally finished, I had Bluetooth in my system preferences and it's working -- my coworker with a palm Tungsten T was able to hotsync to my computer. I haven't figured out how to get the mouse or keyboard to work though (on Windows, they had special installers).

I just bought a T616 hoping to use the B/T and the phone as a modem to connect to a dial up ISP but am led to believe that my Cellular S/P terminates the script because they don't want anyone tying up their bandwidth using the GSM connection. I'm on a AT & T connection. big disappointment but I might try the GPRS system when my Fatport subscription expires. I was flat out told by my service providers data support it was not possible to access a dial up ISP with the phone and it was suggested that it wasn't allowed after racking my brain and all the frustrating attempts to get it going.

I thought by using GPRS the connection would be faster for wireless internet to my laptop. (Do I have to have T-Mobile's t-zones to do GPRS to my laptop?) -
