Aperture 2.0 has four important cornerstones. You can work faster. It's easier to use. The image quality is even better. And there's new camera support.

In this interview with Joe Schorr (Apple Senior Product Manager), Derrick Story asks about the key features in this latest release of Apple's top drawer photo management software. Discussion points touch on:

The new tabbed HUD with added adjustment tools.

Interface Changes, including the tabbed inspector, double-click behaviors, and the new All Projects, which is similar to Events in iPhoto.

Performance Improvements, including the optimized database for better searching and browsing, and Quick Previews that use available Jpegs instead of always decoding the Raw file. Photographers can use this mode for everything but image editing. Single key toggling in and out of Quick Preview mode by pressing the "P" key.

Image Decoding and Adjusting, including the Raw 2.0 decoder and a host of new editing tools. Joe also talks about Baseline DNG that enables Aperture users to work with DNGs, even if the native Raw format isn't supported by Aperture.

New Camera Support, featuring Canon G9, Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III, Nikon D300, Nikon D3, Hasselblad CF-22, Hasselblad CF-39, Leaf Aptus 75s, and the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700.

Can anyone explain why when i import raw files from my camera in large quantities they are scaled down from 28mb to about 7mb? But when i import photos individually they aren't re-sized. Is there a setting i've missed somewhere as i can only see metadata import options when importing and no scaling options.

Importing whole 1.5 library into 2.0 FULL version ?

Can I import a whole 1.5 library into the full version of Aperture 2 (as if it would be an upgrade version) ?

I am a physician looking to use aperture 2 for my before and after photo archiving and workflow. I am wondering how this software would handle the volume of photos that we archive. Would each patient be an album - if so there would be thousands of albums? Will this work? Thanks

There is a natural hierarchy to Aperture (as far as I've found). At the core is a "PROJECT". This is how I do it, but YMMV ..

A PROJECT should hold all the photos relative to a "session" (think "roll of film").

A FOLDER can hold all objects, but the way I do it is to use the folders as an ordering method where I start at a Year (2008) for the top level folder, underneath that, I have 12 folders (01..12) for the months, and within each month folder, I put the PROJECTS. The PROJECT is named YYYY MM DD - (Event name) in which the series of related shots are stored.

If I was to organize your collection, I would probably have Folders with the customers name, and then the different collection of PROJECTS that related to the photos from a customer visit.

You may also want to look at RELOCATABLE MASTERS for this kind of file keeping.

Also -- to me, an ALBUM is a collection of Aliased or references to pictures that are kept in a PROJECT and are used for either printing or publishing as a temporary body of work. They are not meant for permanent storage or association as much as the PROJECT collection is.

Why does iPhoto read D3/D300 RAW, but not the existing Aperture?

Why does it work in iPhoto'08 and not Aperture 1.5.x?
If it's true that in order to use Nikon D3/D300 RAW files in Aperture, we are forced to buy Aperture 2,then Apple is playing a kind of extortion game. It's unconscionable that they would allow the Finder, iPhoto '08, and Preview to recognize and work with D3/D300 RAW and purposely not permit the existing version of Aperture to read those same files.

So instead of allowing the existing version of Aperture to read it, which it should be able to because the less sophisticated iPhoto can, Apple is forcing Aperture users to pay the $99 upgrade price. This is just insult upon injury. Not only did we have to wait three months for OS X to recognize D3/D300 files, but now that OS X can read those files natively, for some reason the current Aperture was not modified to do so and thus we are being coerced into upgrading to Aperture 2.

This is dirty pool and it is something that I truly did not expect from Apple. I have been an advocate of theirs since the first Macintosh came out in 1984. Never would I have thought that they would do something like this. This is a low and petty move unbecoming of a company like Apple.

does the G9 support assume one has upgraded to leopard. i'm on powerbook G4 running tiger. do i have to upgrade to get all these fancy new things to work?
