I first met Julian Cash at an O'Reilly Open Source Convention a few years back. I was shooting the editorial, and Julian was running around with a wide-angle lens and a twin flash bracket capturing these wonderfully striking portraits. Julian uses the wide lens to emphasize a foreground element while building the rest of the composition around it.

Another integral aspect of Julian's technique is to engage the subject during the shoot, then record the resulting experience. Often he uses props and encourages the subject to interact with the prop while the camera is clicking away. More often than not, all these elements come together in a decisive moment.
