I spend a lot of my time in a web browser (my top applications are the terminal window, an e-mail client, a web browser, and a text editor, in random order). The fewer distractions, the better.
I use Firefox as my browser, in part because it has a few important extensions that are impossible to ignore. One stands out primarily in that I almost never notice it: NoScript. This extension blocks JavaScript, Flash, and Java code from executing automatically. If I need such code to run for a particular page, I can allow it temporarily. If I always need the code to run (such as on our site statistics reports), I can enable it permanently.
The rest of the web is blissfully quiet non-responsive to anything but my clicks. Thank you to all of the NoScript developers and contributors!
I disabled Java in Tools/Options/Content. On demand enabling of JavaScript would be too cumbersome for me.
You must not use many AJAX sites.
Or for Safari users: disable javascript under Preferences/Security, and check the "load plug-in manually" option in SafariStand.
@Brianary -- I haven't seen many worth the pain yet. Usually a site's requiring Javascript is an indication that it's not worth using.
I have tried NoScript and found that even without web 2.0 most sites I visit require some piece of script to function. More than then that, the popup of NoScript asking me to approve or disapprove a script was much more annoying then the scripts themselves.
I wouldn't be without NoScript and Adblock (not Plus as my filters work extremely well). I use them for the same reason the author states. To make the web BLISSFULLY quiet because JavaScript is too often used to simply create noise. Aside from that, I don't trust any site to run arbitrary code on my computer.
If NoScript can turn "JavaScript, Flash, and Java" induvidually its a must have for me :-) The two Js can be turned off in Fox options but strangly not Flash, which is the plugin I would like to disable 99% of the time since 99% of the time it is just used for ads.
Mikael, NoScript can block JavaScript, Java, Flash and any other plugin, replacing the visual ones (e.g. Flash) with a convenient "click to unblock" placeholder.
Dmitriy Kropivnitskiy, if you really tried NoScript, you should know that it doesn't popup anything. It silently does its work in background, blocking annoyances but not your navigation. You're the one who starts interaction, only if and when needed.
