It’s been three months since PHP Versions in the Wild. What does Nexen report about PHP version adoption statistics for November?
I find this information all too fascinating; most of the software I write isn’t web-available, so I never get to see who uses new versions or old versions nor any statistical information about who prefers what.
Nexen’s PHP Adoption Stats for November 2006 show that PHP 4.4 has surpassed PHP 4.3. PHP 5 is in the double-digits, but it’s still a fraction of PHP 4’s popularity, despite its climb.
Fortunately, PHP before version 4 barely registers on the graph.
Still, I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to work on PHP 6 while realizing that, if PHP 5 is any indication, it’ll be two years before a significant percentage of users upgrade.
What I would like to know is how many new projects are started in PHP 4 vs PHP 5. Unfortunately those statistics aren't as easy to grab.
I agree with Arnold Daniels as far as better stats are needed. I think its great that ONLAMP provides news clips like the one above, but so does every other major tech related website does too. A little more detail would be nice.
I also work on SEMarketing and one web news I find fascinating is HITWISE.com, check out their blog as an exmaple of how you can improve these short news clips. Just a thought.
