Tell me again how extending the copyright on Steamboat Willie (released in 1928) is going to encourage him to create more artistic works? Walt’s been awfully quiet for a while now….

I'll admit, I didn't pay any attention to copyright and didn't understand the fuss until I read this Q&A. Imagine that, I actually learned something from Slashdot.
Well, it obviously won't encourage him, but it might encourage others to create more artistic work if they knew that their progeny would benefit. Either way, I have no real opnions on the issue.

Disney died on Dec. 15, 1966 from lung cancer.

Previously, copyright was 28 years, later amended to make it eligible for one 28 year extention. (In the seventies revised and currently at lifetime+70 years, I believe.)
I had heard Disney execs., concerned they would loose their star (after all, it all started with a mouse), created under older law, lobbied for change. I would not be surprised if others were on that bandwagon as well, although this is only my opinion.
(To answer a question from below: Walt died from Cancer, in the hospital, in December of 1966. He was cremated and is in graveyard out there. )
Mickey Mouse will always be Walt Disney's, anyone that would want to take this mouse away from Disney, would never be able to convince the millions that wear those ears, that he or she, deserves any of the credit. It's as sick as Micheal Jackson having the rights to the beatles, It's perposterous, and I hope that the rights to that special mouse that my children met for the first time this month, are never released to anyone. Hears to you Walt.
