Google turns 9 today. The official chronological history is online at the corporate history page.
Their most important contribution is the effective search engine they provide. Today, the word searching on the web pretty much implies “googling” ! However, there is another extremely important contribution from their side and that is sharing the code that makes them succeed. Most of you already know and use some of the Google APIs.
So Google now influences not only how you use the web but also how you continue to build the web. This can imply either of the two outcomes - (1) Google the savior - in which case it accelerates liberation of most closed software and compels others to follow and (2) Google the tyrant - in which case it monopolizes not only your business but your mind. What do you think may be the probable outcome? Do you think it makes you uncomfortable that a 9 year old rules your life?

Why there is so much fascination about Google?In terms of technology I don't see any superiority compared to other search engines.We could have browsed the internet without Google also.Personally I rarely used Google and my life is not so bad.You have to remember that THEY ARE NOT INVENTORS.
Prasnna: It was the first company that made internet search really usable. If you remember the years before Google (Altavista, and the like), search results were pretty much random crap. Relevant links were usually buried under piles of nonsense, maybe on some 3rd or 4th page you would find something useful. Search engines these days are pretty good, but honestly, they mostly copied Google. So Google is the web search inventor of sorts.

MB- I seocnd your thoughts.Google was not inventor at all.If you are aware of NLP or indexing,web crawling etc Google is not an inventor at all.In fact their trcik lies in fact they hide the implementation.Saying Google an inventor as same saying as Microsoft invented Operating system or GUI.
Invention is different than making it popular.
Now a days if you see their strategy, they purchse most things that creating ther own.
Ofcourse google is cute and nice but should not be mistaken as some pathbreaking creator or inventor.

Nope.Lot of college grads love it especially gmail/Orkut/search engine but it would be an exggageration o say it rules our life.statistically Google is not much different than Alta Vista/Yahoo! or Microsoft.Ofcourse google is cute and nice but we would have browsed the net with equal ease without Google too.
