Pummeled by palettes, I’ve been thinking of connecting the extra DVI output* on my G5 tower to a second monitor. That daydream got a boost when my terrific eye doctor raved about his multi-monitor home setup recently.

So…what advice do you have for setting up and using multiple monitors? Do you like them side by side? Over/under? Same size/brand? How do you arrange programs, windows, palettes, and the Dock?

I’m currently running a 20-inch Dell 2005FPW (1,680×1,050), which can pivot 90°, so it might be interesting to set up a 2,100×1,680 system, though that would look pretty goofy for movies.

My primary applications are Ableton Live, BIAS Peak, Firefox, Eudora, Tex-Edit Plus, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver, but I’d love to hear your insights on using other applications. And for those of you with 24-inch or bigger monitors, do you use secondary monitors as well?
