Cooper and I have been IM’ing all afternoon (instead of, you know, working). Here are some things we’re itching to know:
- Is there a camera? Does it matter?
- How ’bout an SDK? Will Apple be the only provider of software?
- Even 8GB isn’t exactly a lot of space for video. Think there’ll be a stand-alone hard-drive widescreen iPod soon?
- If it’s running a slimmed-down Mac OS X, does it have Java SE? Or any Java? The phone kids love that Java
- Standard iPod connector? Does it fit current peripherals?
Aside: needing so much time in the keynote to launch iPhone and Apple TV, do you suppose we’ll see an Apple event in a couple weeks/months to launch Leopard, new versions of iLife and iWork, and the other conspicuously missing usual suspects from this keynote?
I forgot another one: what about Cisco's iPhone?
Well, they said it has a 2 Mpixel camera, and there's a Camera icon on the main screen, so yeah, it has a camera. :)
I also want to know if I can use the iPhone's internet connection for my laptop, as I can now with the Treo. (http://vocaro.com/trevor/treo-dun/) If so, I'll switch to the iPhone; if not, I'm keeping my Treo.
re. point 4 - I'd say it's pretty inevitable. The next refresh of the full-size iPod will have to offer the same UI, probably along with a 100g drive, although it really depends on how sales of the full-size are going. Then again, it would be enough of a leap forward to make me think about replacing my 3G.
It won't work with the nano, because of the form factor, but if they switched the shape of the Nano over to something more credit-card in shape, it might, so I wonder if we'll see that.
Oh, and wireless connection to the AppleTV of course!
The phone kids don't give a crap about Java. They like games and music and stuff. They couldn't care less if it's done via Java or not.
And given the lack of games, and the presence of e-mail, calendars and conference calling, I think Apple's aiming for adults here.
It'll be interesting to see if it pays off. A million phones in a year? Can they do it? Anyone got numbers on any other high-profile phones?

What processor is it running?
2MP camera. Standard iPod connector. The slot is for the SIM card; unknown whether it has a flash memory slot. The iphone won't be so great for DUN since its just EDGE. slow. Cisco put out a statement this morning about the iPhone saying they were waiting for apple to sign the final papers on the name.
The only thing I use my LifeDrive for is video...and you'd be surprised how much 4GB can hold with Handbrake. It's enough for 5 or 6 videos that look beautiful on the screen compressed to 500mb.
Seeing the iPod-open-to-third-party-developers mentality there's little doubt that the iPhone is going to stay a closed platform as well. Don't be fooled. This is another lo-tech consumer gadget.
This is such a huge deal. Unix flavor on a mobile phone. The reason nobody at Apple talks about this fact is that we are not going to benefit from it. No secure terminal connections to your desktop computer. No custom rsync backup solution.
The iPhone is going to be to smart phones as the Mighty Mouse is to multi button mice.
