My new 20″ iMac G5 arrived via FedEx this morning, and as I unpacked it and settled on a name for the new device (Prospero, to fit my Shakespearean conventions), I didn’t realize how large a surprise I was in for.
Once through the initial setup, I saw something I’d never seen before in Software Update. What’s that little home symbol? I’m familiar with the symbol that indicates a reboot is necessary, but what’s the little home icon for?
Have you seen this odd new icon?

Home Icon
The symbol indicates that the update being installed requires that you log out before it will work properly. There are also obviously updates that require a restart.

Log Out & In?
I could imagine that it's a sign that you have to log out and back in again to have it really updated.
But I am not sure, I have never seen it, too.

Now that's a spiffy enhancement.

Finally. It always annoys me when I update something without realizing it's a "restart required" fix while I've got several other things pending.

This is not a new enhancement.
Software Update has had this as ability since the Panther release of Mac OS X (OS 10.3.x released October 2003). However, very few updates (in fact none that I can remember) require the logout/login. The vast majority require a complete restart or no action at all.
The Front Row update is the first I have seen that requires the user to logout.

I'd assume that this icon indicates that the associated update is user specific as opposed to system-wide, so other users in a multi-user environment will also have to run the update to get it.
