One of my users complained today that automount for USB devices wasn’t working on his machine (running Debian etch). I did a little light Googling, & came across this article on the subject.
Which seemed horrendously complicated for something that (surely?) should Just Work out-of-the-box. Hmm. Messed around a bit with the suggestions there, but to no avail.
Further googling produced this blog post which suggested a much more simple solution - add the user to the plugdev group. This worked like a charm. My thanks to Matt!
I note in passing that this is one of the downsides of central auth - the “emergency” local user is automatically added to this group (& also part of the audio group), but Kerberos/LDAP users unsurprisingly aren’t.

Hi, I would like to comment that I did what you told, but it didn't work.
I have debian etch, and the user is in the plugdev group, but the usb disks doesn't mount automatically when you try to access them
Salutes.
Mariano - have you/the user logged out & back in again? Also, try unplugging the disks & plugging them back in again.
I have done this and Im also not getting it to work as a regular user, yet as root its fine. Why would I be forced into root for something this simple, when other distros ( ubuntu for one faik ) dont force root.
I hope this is'nt normal as it seems excessive to ask someone to do such things for such basic fucntionality.
I'll check when I get back to linux, but I also followed directions and its only letting me get access as root.
