In search of a few good authors...

By Brett McLaughlin

Suppose you're reading your favorite Head First book, waiting for your stop to come up on the train. You're learning, it's great, you might even laugh a bit along the way. All good stuff, right? But then it hits you, a giant lightning bolt straight from Zeus, or Poseidon, or whatever other mythological god you want to throw out there...

Man, I SO wish there was a Head First book on MY favorite topic. You know, like Head First...

Insert Killer Topic Here Yeah, you know the topic we're talking about. It's near and dear to your heart. And the more you think about it, the more you realize... you can't be the only one that would like that topic in a Head First style, right? There are probably a ton of people thinking the same thing you are.

But here's what sets you apart from all the other people on the train. You know, the ones buried in Visual QuickStart guides and stuffy reference tomes, scratching their heads and wondering why they always feel so lost and confused...

...you think maybe, with some help and a lot of hard work, you could actually write that killer Head First book. You know a lot about the topic, you're super-passionate, and your topic would look great in Head First purple, a hot chick on the front cover, and your name in lights (or at least the black title bar along the bottom).

It’s up to you to shape the Head First library. What topic do you think you might be able to write a Head First book on, that people would really benefit from? Write your topic in the blank below.

Oh, come on. Those books are amazing, and I’m no graphic designer. How am I supposed to write a Head First book? Besides, I’m pretty good at my topic, but nobody’s ever heard of me.

Skeptical Girl

It takes a village (or at least a team)

Here at Head First, we work as a team. Every author (and many books have more than one) works with their editor, the series editor, a design editor, a production person, and a whole slew of others. They get trained, they gets tons of support, tools, templates, and all the help we can provide.

But it all starts with YOU. You've got to head over to our Write for us page, and see what topics we're into. You've got to take a stab at it. And besides, the thing you love about these books is that they're interactive, right? So come on, interact! We want passionate individuals, people who are into teaching and learner. It doesn't matter if you're a no-name, big-name, or household-name. You can even have a middle initial if you like. Just... bring your brain. Click the Write For Us tab and check us out!

I'd love to see the HF Algebra book.. but no news on this front since last summer.. ;-/

Hi Chris,

We're hard at work on Head First Algebra as I type, and we're looking towards publishing the book late this year. We certainly appreciate your patience, and we're doing our best to ensure that Head First Algebra is more than worth the wait!

How about H.F. Neurosurgery? Eight years of med school, five years of surgeon school, then four more about the brain? Puh-leeze!! If you could squeeze all of that into one HF book, then some of us could finally get past Hospital Security right to where we belong -- the operating room!! Thanks!!

What about Ruby and Rails? I'd like to see that.

Hi Fred,

Head First Ruby on Rails is also in the works, and we're planning to release the book in the fall. Stay tuned for more updates!

I'd like to see a Head First Perl book. I've tried using other books, but I just can't get into them because I'm a visual learner.

Hi,

I think that's book about those subject can be a good idea :
- Programming a Website in Asp.Net
- Programming a Website in PHP (using Framework like Prado, PHPCake ...)
- Programming Web 2.0 Websites
- Development of Webservices
- Games programming

PS : Writing a book about Ruby on Rails is a good idea!

Thx!

I know what I'd want in a Head First book

I think the world needs a Head First on Prolog, A.I and C++. On less technical stuff, Head Fisrt Writing novels and Psychology arn't a bad idea.

The Head First book I'd love to see is Head First Python, any chance of that one at some time? Love your books, I have the HTML and JavaScript books and they're both fantastic!
