Great Essay on Creative Thinking

By Catherine Nolan

One of the great things about Head First being part of the O'Reilly family is that we get to work with a lot of really great...I mean really great people. I wanted to point our readers to another one of our authors, Scott Berkun, who doesn't write for Head First, but is one of our fans.

Well guess what. I'm a fan of his work too. In addition to his two great books, The Myths of Innovation, and The Art of Project Management, he writes a lot of really cool essays on things that mean a lot to us at Head First.

A few of my faves, Creative Thinking Hacks (a 5 minute crash course in how creative thinking happens), How to Stay Motivated (what to do when the energy and fun starts to fade), and the ever hilarious Attention and Sex (what we give undivided attention to matters more than anything else).

So...take a read, there's a lot of great stuff over at www.scottberkun.com. Tell him Head First sent you!

Have you seen Brian Eno's "Oblique Strategies"? It's a card desk of "Over One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas". If you are ever stuck with a creative problem, you choose a card at random and it might say something like "Voice your suspicions", which is kind of meaningless in itself but can jolt your brain into a new direction. Probably a little like Head First books push your brain through a topic.

There's a dashboard widget over at Apple for it.

Hey Catherine! Great job on SQL! Anything coming on XML?

There are lots of creative thinking decks out there - Thinkpack used to be my favorite, as it's made by Michael Michalko, the author of the excellent ThinkerToys.

There are also IDEO's method cards, but these are more for designers than general creative thinking.

I've seen the deck by Roger Van Och, but I couldn't find a link (He's the author of a whack on the side of the head).

Thank you for everything Catherine!

Check out Creative Think. It is kind of funky in a HF way.

Cambridge is cool, but it was nice to get back to Montana ;-)

I really like Head First SQL.

Great widget, Daniel. I just installed it!
