Here’s a rare sighting of a friendly pack of O’Reilly authors gathered at the Watering Hole (otherwise known as the O’Reilly booth) and the place to be seen and heard at OSCON. The first one to name all these literary lights wins a coupon for a free O’Reilly T Shirt from QOOP.

…as Steve Weiss, one of our O’Reilly editors says. Two particularly nice reviews have come to my attention in the past few days, both for brand-new releases: Colin Moock’s Essential ActionScript 3.0 and Deke McClelland’s Adobe Photoshop CS3 One-on-One.
A brief review of Essential ActionScript 3.0 on Amazon had nothing but praise for Moock’s new release:
“What a joy to read! I’m finally creating projects, instead of reading code samples, like I did in EA2. This is a great reference and teaching tool. If you work with Flash or Flex, this is a “must-have” for your library.”
The rest of the review continues in this vein…
Likewise, Deke’s latest book rakes in the reviews, this one coming from AppleLust.com:
“Loading and playing the almost three hours of Deke McClelland’s training videos is as plain and concise an introduction to each of Photoshop’s tools and techniques as you can get. Then the book takes over after each introductory lesson of video and explains, elaborates, and clarifies each tool and concept. It is a one-on-one, work-at-your-own-pace, set of logically organized and step-by-step procedures…Deke McClelland brought me up to speed on the latest version, CS3, and dropped a lot of personal comments, anecdotes, and insights into the process. I think that both the beginning Photoshop user and the experienced Photoshop devotee will have things to learn from this package.”

A gorgeous interactive wall of projected animation to promote Adobe’s CS3 products was unveiled in New York City’s Union Square.
According to the New York Times: “As pedestrians walk past the wall, infrared sensors will lock on to the person closest to the wall, who will then be able to control a projected slider button at the bottom of the wall.
As the selected pedestrian continues walking and moves the slider along, the wall will start displaying colorful animation and playing music, effects that will grow or recede at the pace that the person advances or retreats.”

David Pogue’s latest lyrics, sung to “My Way:”
“I want to touch that precious screen,
I want to rub the smudges clean,
I want my friends to look and drool,
I want to say, “Look, now I’m cool!”
I stood in line, and I’ll get mine:
I’ll get an iPhone!”
