Newsweek: Life Isn't Just as You Want It? Remix It! The weirdness bar was set pretty high at last week's Emerging Technology Conference (ETech) in San Diego. Even so, a lot of the techie presenters cleared it with room to spare. [Newsweek] PCMag: Google Open-Sources Code Google Inc. introduced a developer Web site called Google Code during a presentation here Thursday at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. As part of the launch, it has contributed source code from four software development libraries and tools to the open-source community. [InformationWeek] Nature: Utensils Divulge Dinner Date's Feelings Although it may never reach the market, a new type of dating tool could give inspiration to the romantically challenged. By attaching electrodes to regular eating utensils, inventor James Larsson has created knives and forks that can pick up on whether the person across the table feels uncomfortable or pleased. [Nature] Technology Review: Is It Possible to Be Too Connected? Perhaps you shouldn’t be reading the TR blog. Or at least, not solely this blog. Why not? As James Surowiecki--New Yorker writer, Technology Review contributor, and author of the recent book The Wisdom of Crowds--pointed out today at the O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego, it may be possible to be excessively hooked into the buzz, zeitgeist, or groupthink around a certain topic. [MIT Technology Review] This is huge for educational podcasting: Odeo Yesterday, at Etech, I saw a presentation by Evan Williams of Odeo. Who is Evan Williams... out weighs the bad. I think we should be all over this. This is the kind of thing I went to Etech to see! [Edupodder Weblog] ZDNet: ETech summary This morning's opening keynote presenter was Larry Lessig, a natural at a conference about remixing. Larry gives an amazing presentation--very entertaining and informative. [ZDNet] O'Reilly Network: ETech Day 4 - Life Hacks and the Brain for Designers Day 4 of ETech was just as energetic and caffeinated as the previous three days. As much as I love ETech, I am really looking forward to getting a full nights sleep when the conference is over. On day 4 I attended presentations that focused on human aspects -- both from the personal perspective as well as the perspective of the people for whom we create web pages/user interfaces. [O'Reilly Weblogs] New York Times: As File Sharing Nears High Court, Net Specialists Worry As the bitter debate over computer file sharing heads toward the Supreme Court, the pro-technology camp is growing increasingly anxious. [eWeek] ZDNet: Phishing concerns taint legitimate email Increasingly, people are regarding legitimate transactional e-mails from companies as fraudulent, not just mistaking phishing e-mails as real, according to Jonathan Oliver from MailFrontier. He spoke at Etech this afternoon about phishing attacks and social engineering. [ZDNet] MAKE: ODEO Podcast Service Blogger.com founder Evan Williams from ODEO gave a preview of the podcast recording, hosting and publishing service. [O'Reilly Weblogs] Boing Boing: ETECH Notes - Life Hacks Live! Here are my notes from Danny O'Brien and Merlin Mann's Life Hacks Live, at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego. [Boing Boing] Boing Boing: HOWTO make a VC pitch in PowerPoint Courtesy of Marc Hedlund's Emerging Tech talk, VC Funding for Geeks; or, How to Get Your Technology to Emerge the VC Way: a fantastic article on how to create effective PowerPoint venture capital pitches, written by a VC who's sat through too many made ones. [ZDNet] BusinessWeek: Get Ready for Spag Heard at the Emerging Technology conference, the possible birth of a new word: spag. [MAKE Magazine Weblog] Technology Review: Yahoo, O'Reilly Hope to Harness "Wisdom of Crowds" The notion that crowds possess a collective intelligence not available to individuals is hot these days, thanks in part to books like James Surowiecki's "The Wisdom of Crowds." At the O'Reilly ETech conference in San Diego this morning, O'Reilly's Rael Dornfest and Gary William Flake of Yahoo Research Labs announced a collaboration that draws on this concept in an effort to predict technology trends. Still, George Dyson gave a fantastic talk about the father of modern computing, and about Kurt Goedel, who had an office above his at Princeton. [Guardian Unlimited] Dare Obasanjo: ETech 2005 Trip Report ZDNet: A9 Syndicates Search At the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference today, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos introduced A9's OpenSearch, which he hopes will to do for search what RSS has done for content. [ZDNet] Boing Boing: ETech Notes O'Reilly Network: The Aggressive Automator Goes to ETech I've spent a lot of time learning the shortcuts of my OS, applications, shell, and editor. Inefficiencies bug me. Now when I go to conferences and the person beside me or in front of me takes the long way around something, I shudder. What should I do? [O'Reilly Weblogs] PodcastNetwork: ETech Interacts If there is one conference that should know how to provide a fantastic interactive experience, even for those not at the event, itís ETech, or OíReillyís Emerging Technology, which started yesterday. [43 Folders] MAKE: iPod ebooks Here's a quick, free, cross-platform way to make iPod ebooks. I'm heading off to Etech next week and since I'll have my iPod with me most of the time, I figured I'd "ebookify" the conference schedule. Here's how to do it... [MAKE Magazine Weblog] |
