The Story of the Lightroom Web Module

If you've been following the Adobe Lightroom Adventure to Iceland, you know that we've published a dozen galleries from members of the team. Viewing them, you might realize that some of them are using the current template available in Beta 3 for the Mac, and then others are, well, using something different.

The story behind the difference is a good one, and I'm going to share what I can about it. Back in Iceland, it was my job to gather images from the photographers, photo edit them, and post the galleries on the Adventure site. About 1am one morning when I was working on the first gallery, it was clear that the Lightroom Web module was in need of love. Fortunately, George Jardine works long hours too, and he jumped in the fray.

Iceland Hotdogs

Photo: George Jardine (left), Addy Roff, and Peter Krogh eating a staple of Iceland - their amazing hot dogs that you can find in any remote corner of the country. (I ate quite a few of them myself.)

George had hit the same wall a few weeks earlier and was working with the engineers on some new web templates. He shared one with me for the next gallery, and it was definitely a step in the right direction. Web Gallery 2 is a product of the experimental template. Gallery 1 is the old template that's available in Beta 3.

We kept the communication lines open with Adobe engineers during the week in Iceland, and continued to work on the Web template. The current incarnation was used for George's posted gallery, and work on improving the module. continues

When I chatted with George in his podcast after we returned, I remarked that the software development aspect of the trip was as exciting for me as the Icelandic landscape. I can't wait to see how the final version of the Web module turns out. But I can tell you this... it's development was field tested under working conditions. I hope this will be another success story from our Adventure.

Hi guys,
I am in the process of putting a gallery online and i was wondering how I could get some borders to put around my photographs? At the moment they are just floating in the middle of the page and the setting doesn't look great. Is there a border/frame function with Lightrooms web module that I have missed?
Thanks,
Therese

Is there a problem with Lightroom webs when being viewed from Vista's IIS7? I have a problem that the template pages work fine, but the images are not displayed. Even when I link directly to the images from a plain html page, the image does not load.

I believe that the problem may lie in the fact that the images are in a folder hierarchy that is not supported under IIS7. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hi Rob,

You can insert a link back to a main menu on each gallery.
If you do not use the e-mail link.
Under Labels instead of puring your name in the "Contact Info" box type in "Back to Main Menu" and in the "Web or Mail link" type in the address of your main menu eg. http://www.mymainmenu.com

In the retail version of Lightroom 1.0, the web module includes some nice templates. I use the Flash variety for my web gallery. I need badly one additional feature to be added to the template I use: a possibility to include a link in the menu area. That link would allow me to direct viewers back to the main "entrance" where all my galleries would be accessible.

Unfortunately, my web-developer's skills are very amateurish, so I have no idea how to do it. Are there any tutorials out there teaching how to modify Flash-based templates?

I love the lightroom web module! BUT, making custom templates is a bit difficult for the average user, so im creating a site with easy to understand tutorials and sample templates to download. The site is http://www.lightroomgalleries.com

George's gallery has unique captions for each photo. I've figured out how to do this in LR, but it's a manual operation. I caption in Library mode and apply in the web module via the text template editor. Is there a better way? It sure would be nice if I could access caption info. from the description field of file info. in PS. I have a lot of images that I'll need to re-caption for gallery use. Just wondering. m

Now that iView Media Pro is no longer independent, I'm interested in reading more about the web-template modules. Do keep up the info, please.
