I guess I should clarify that I always use NFS, which behaves differently than AFP and SMB for network home directories. I personally like NFS as you can use it for Linux and Mac. You might try doing an su - to that same user your having problems with to see if you can log in from the command line and get a home directory. If you can that it would make it point to fast user switching.
