I'm not at all an expert on Derby but I guess that the advantage of Derby is that you can use it as an embedded database which comes with your Java application on:


Java Webstart applications
Mobile phones with Java
Desktop applications with small datasets


and what you already found out - for development


(Good article / tips by the way, I did not read it as 'Derby is taking over the world')
