Thanks for the intelligent review! One correction, it IS possible to edit mp3 files without converting, by using a nifty freeware utility called mp3DirectCut.

It's a no-frills editor that works; I use it to chop a field recording into named sections then auto save the cuts into different files with ID3 tags.
