Even though I agree with this article, I don't think that it will possible to change Java so much: Sun and companions are not so flexible, and exisiting software would not run on the new VMs (mobile phones now coming out e.g.)
I deeply regret this.

    I don't know about the author, but I have survived the .com implosion (so far). We have 4 developers supporting 3 personalized sites. The last thing we need to do is rewrite a bunch of code that was written by a person 2 layoffs ago, just so we can upgrade to the next version.

    Making an incompatible version would only slow it's introduction.

    Instead, add new class structures (like nio) so we can take advantage of them, but PLEASE DON'T BREAK MY PROGRAMS THAT WORK JUST FINE.
