Is it a know occurrence for the Ruby/Rails installation to wipe the system path variable? I might be poking in the dark but I have a suspicion it happened on my machine.

This is a known problem with the One-Click Ruby Installer for windows. It happens when the existing path is already greater than 1024 characters in length. It will be fixed in the next release.
