mplayer on osx has problems and mplayer doesn't care to fix them. Try vlc, it's much nicer and plays all the formats just fine.

I find that mplayer does crash occasionally. However, it seems to be able to play a wider variety of movies than vlc. I also think the mplayer keyboard controls are better than the vlc keyboard controls.
