  Maybe because the tutorial gives it a very bad first impression? It seems there's a lot of overhead required for test writing using check. At least that's the impression I got from its tutorial (http://check.sourceforge.net/doc/x108.html) when I checked it out some time ago.

  Oh, yeah. No Perl necessary, and it ties in nicely with autoconf/automake.

  There's no Perl necessary when using libtap either. And it's dead simple to use it from (auto)make.
