One improvement, to back up and edit fstab in one command:

# sed -i .orig 's/ad0/mirror\/gm0/' /etc/fstab

(This edits fstab in-place after creating a backup as fstab.orig. Confirmed in 6.0-RELEASE, should work in others.)
