The article states the following line should be used to change ownership of the var directory and its contents: sudo chown -R mysql /usr/local/var/* Doing this, I was not able to successfully get mysqld to run. I had to change ownership of the var directory itself as well before mysql would start properly. This did the trick: sudo chown -R mysql /usr/local/var
