If you want to explore the new and fascinating possibilities opened up by the marriage of the Mac interface with UNIX, check out the free, open source "alternative" to Photoshop, GIMP. Installing and using GIMP is good introduction to the dark UNIX underbelly of OS X. You'll have to install a UXIX-based windowing system, and the GIMP application itself.
