Configuring Database Access in Eclipse 3.0 with SQLExplorer

Thanks for writing the article for us. It allowed me to set up this plug-in within no time. That's great.

I compared the performance of SQLExplorer plug-in within Eclipse with "Free TOAD" client (for simple SELECT sql queries).

My SQLExplorer plug-in uses Oracle OCI driver, and so does the "Free TOAD".

But, consistently, Eclipse needed 1079 msecs (or so) whereas Free TOAD needed only 1/10th of that time (say, 100 msec).

Wouldn't I prefer "Free TOAD" to this SQLExplorer plug-in? Plus, "Free TOAD" looks nicer with more features available.

TOAD only supports the databases Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL. TOAD bieng faster is definitely an advantage.

1079 msec! That's well over a second! Well.. I use SQLExplorer too with the Oracle thin driver and I don't face this problem.

I hadn't heard of Free Toad. Will check it out

The JDBC driver performance of the thin driver vs oci driver is comparable.

Eh, Wrong! The OCI and Thin driver performance are not comparable ... more over you have just denied yourself the opportunity of using one of your databases best features, TAF. (Transparent Application Failover) In a production RAC environment, with management hovering over your shoulder, do you want to be the Developer that has to tell management ... "I am sorry that I have to shut down the applications but, I was stupid and used the Oracle Thin Driver."

Would you mind sharing your setup information. I have been having problems setting up SQLExplorer with Oracle using either the OCI or Thin client driver.

Although TOAD may be a better choise for Oracle, it is important to have such a utility in Eclipse, rather than being tied to vendor specific environment.
