Running a cafe can get a game of slim margins. Why does everyone assume you need DSL to make it worth while?

I sort of assumed people didn't like dial up because it lacked DSL's "always-on" features, but the Airport base stations takes care of that nicely.

And $20/month dial-up account comes with a lot less strings attached, and hassle.

Sure its slower, but if the choice is between no wireless, and dial-up. I would choose dial-up.

Also, does one really need to buy a new iBook to get Airport Admin software?

Anyone ever heard of SlipStream Data? They increase your dial-up access to nearly the speed of DSL for a fraction of the price. They use compression techniques that compresses the data being sent before it's sent and then uncompress it as it gets to the user for faster transfer speeds. check it out at www.slipstreamdata.com

I can appreciate the game of slim margins, but having a handful of folks sharing a dial-up connection is not going to attract many customers.

They can get dial-up anywhere. If they can visit your establishment, buy a $3 coffee drink and surf the Web in style ... well that's a value-added benefit.

So who is offering $50 business DSL? Most of the major providers want to charge something more along the lines of $200/month. At which point this setup becomes a pretty serious expense.

you'd be better off going with an ISP offering highspeed dialup. basically the same as DSL but way cheaper. Try AOLCanada, Netscape Online or NetZero

SBC/Pacific Bell, which service the Bay Area has a business service with one static IP address for $50 per month, the same price they charge residential customers.

Costs will vary, depending on where your business is located. So, you will have to decide if the extra expense is worth the potential increase in customers.

And I personally wouldn't bother with an Internet Cafe that used dial-up. Why try to relax at a Cafe and have to deal with the aggrivation of multiple users sharing a single dial-up line? That business would probably be better off NOT providing the service.
