This wouldn't have been true 10 years ago and may not be true 10 years in the future. But recently I've found that all my other scientific interests, which are mainly in the natural sciences, always come back to geology.


I suppose all sciences can give you some perspective on your own place in the scheme of things but I've certainly found geology to put everything in a very different perspective. Until I'd been in a few earthquakes it never crossed my mind that the earth beneath my feet wasn't solid. Once you start reading about the oceans that once covered the midwest you just have to see the physical world as much more fluid than you ever could have imagined. Personally I find this sort of information fascinating.

    Funny how the earth beneath and the earth above dovetail so nicely together. I majored in Geography (that's the stuff above) but loved the physical aspects so much that I almost had a minor in Geology. What really slams home the physical issues is when you start looking at planning, especially urban planning and have to account, not only for the motion but for the costs of the "immovable objects."
