I think it is not completely accurate what you say on RRDNS - there are possibilities to take regard of server health state and/or capabilities even with RRDNS. However, you need to be in charge of your DNS and avoid long caching. However, I prefer Hardware Loadbalancing as it has the sideeffect of putting a dumb loadbalancer in front of the server..

You can even do weighted RRDNS by adding certain mappings n-times. This is useful if your cluster consists of nodes with heterogenous capacities.
