Try this installer for Windows instead. This mini-article was written before Mono 1.0 was released, and before this installer was created.

  This combined with using -pkg:gtk-sharp worked great for me, although I always get a console window. This is desired in this case because we are looking for the "HelloWorld!" text in the console when the button is pressed.
  
  Are there ways to disable this behaviour?

  Use -target:winexe to create an executable that doesn't open a console. The default is -target:exe, which creates a console application.
