When I discontinued the $25/month data service that I mention in the article, the carrier loaded a new profile into my phone which exposes a phone firmware bug that was buried with the GPRS profile. The bug is that when the phone is out of contact with the cell network for more than a few minutes (as when on a subway trip, or a drive in the hilly countryside), the phone does not update either display: the LED stays flashing red, and the display shows "No Service". However you can still make and receive calls! There is a Treo 600 update available from PalmOne now for Sprint, soon to be for all carriers (the update is carrier-specific). I am hoping the update will resolve my "display not updated when coming back into range" issue. From their site: "palmOne, Inc. is delivering a software update for Treo 600 smartphones as part of our continuous effort to give customers the best possible experience. The update features performance and reliability enhancements." The link to the carrier-specific page |
