Hi ! You may want to try repairing the permissions once while booted from the Panther Install CD 1. Indeed, would a permissions issue prevent Disk Utility from working properly on your installation, this may help solve it. Then, restart your Mac and repair the permissions on the Mac OS X partition normally. F.J.

  I have the same problem. I rebooted from the Panther install Disk 1 and attempeted to run Disk Utility/Repair Permisssions. I got the same eror message. The same thing happened when running Verify Permissions. Disk Repair said all was well. Running OS X 10.3.9 on eMac.
