Make the different sizes, different icons. Things that work at 128px, are invisible at 32px, so make the smaller icons different, emphasizing important details.

I agree...one thing I didn't really have room to explore in this column is that I think a flat and basic illustrated icon in the tradition of icons or yore would be good for the smaller sized...lose the detail and go back to the basics.
